Centres of Creativity & Design for life
Final year Architecture students are building strong links with the local community by working with children on the town's Guinness Trust Estate.
The estate is home to 87 families and 250 children but has lost most of its community facilities including the local youth club. Residents have identified a number of poverty and exclusion issues which affect their prospects and quality of life and say that the estate has been regarded as a 'sink' for problem cases for a number of years.
The residents' association would like to see the creation of a venue that could be used for recreational and learning activities for adults and children. And as a first step towards starting a programme of positive change it wants to highlight the problems faced by local children.
The programme kicked off with a visit by third-year architecture students to help the children living on the estate to draw pictures of the kind of venue they would like. This was followed up with a visit to the School of Architecture and Design by some of the children to see models created from their ideas.
According to senior lecturer Andre Viljoen, one of the programme's organisers, "The next stage will be for students to build temporary structures on the estate showing how it could be developed to provide facilities for the children living there.
"These installations will be put up on the 18 December as part of an estate-wide event to which a number of visitors and potential facilitators, including the local MP Tim Loughton, representatives from the Guinness Trust and other non-governmental organisations, will be invited. The aim is to use the event as a catalyst for future development on the estate and for Brighton's programme of community-university partnerships."
This project developed from an initial meeting between Andre Viljoen and Wayne Green, during a session at Professor Ranjit Gill's EU India cross-cultural programme. It was set up by Wayne and Andre together with School of Architecture and Design colleague Katrin Bohn, and all three would like to thank both Professor Gill and Strategic Planning Unit staff for their help and support. |
